avoid the MR like the plague. The X seems to make good power with basic mods.

There has been issues with them holding power, im not 100% sure what the issue is but i remember hearing something about the car cutting power if the tranny feels the car is making to much tq.

The main issue with the MR automatic is no one is sure of how the dual disc setup will actually work with upgraded power. Since there are people breaking it stock, the shift logic is still undefined in the preliminary versions of the opensource X software, there are plenty of unknowns. They seem to be rated to a maximum of 350 ftlbs of torque and based on how the ECU works in the 5 speed, it seems this is something Mitsu has spent alot of time working on.
There are 2 tables that control torque limits in addition to the standard boost cut which is for engine protection anyway. There is a table that runs an algorithm much like estimated hp in DSMlink that if the preset torque value is overrun it will drop TPS duty cycle. If it exceeds the preset maximum airflow value at a given (generally low) rpm it will mimic boost cut in order to protect the tranny.

There have been alot of people reporting notchiness or grinding in the 5 speed models as well. Is there a known cause or solution to this problem?

From driving the ETS test bed and one other customer car it felt similar to what I experienced in my IX stock. I would presume a clutch and gear oil change would go a long way. They are still DSM at heart.

 That they are still DSM make. Evo 9 was like that after a little use but with new fluids was much better.

Stock the X is somewhat boring IMO but who leaves them stock? The trans in our car is notchy like described above even with fresh fluids. Better then it was but it is still there. The car is great for a quick DD though. Comfortable, quiet and lots of mid range for around town stuff.
