View Full Version : Oil Squirter Talk: Are You Keeping Them?

I am creating this topic with street driven dailys in mind, but input in regards to highly modified high power non street driven engines will apply as well.
I would like to hear some opinions and thoughts about guys who keep/axe the factory piston squirter jets on the 4G63 engines, in all years of production.
I always have believed in keeping them, as they were put their for a reason from the factory. However, factory parts and design isn't always the best bet for a highly modified application. I know their are theorys that when going from a cast factory piston to a forged piece, some people say these squirters "are no longer needed". However, I just don't feel that it's enough of a reason to get rid of them.
I have also heard of cases where the check valve bolt has backed out and fell into the pan, causing a huge loss in pressure or other catastrophic failure. But it seems to me this is questionable as well, as it seems using new components and torquing the bolts correctly to the specified torque would make this impossible unless there was another underlying problem with vibration or faulty part.
I have in the past re-used old squirters and check valves, but after checking through a bunch of sets of the bolts and finding the valves to be bound up, I have decided to only use new pieces on each engine build, regardless. My next buildup is a 6 bolt using 1g 6bolt check valve bolts and Evolution squirters.
Lets hear if you got em, and why or why not!

if they aren't kept i don't think it will hurt so much or at all...lets take the 2jz for example....many people build the factory non turbo 2jz's that do not come with oil squirters and they do not have any problems as well as the 4g64 blocks

I've prefered to keep the squirters in street engines over the years.
I have kept the non turbo blocks that don't have them for race builds.
I've seen no difference in power using either one but in theory without the extra oil being scraped off the cylinder walls from the squirters the car should make more power.

Have you seen any negative results that in your opinion can be directly related to removing the oil squiters in the street motors?

I'mof the mind set of keeping them, if only to help cool the underside of the pistons.

I have not seen any adverse effects of not keeping them.
I agree that they aid in keeping the piston cooler.
All of the EVO engines we build, of course have them. We have made more power with the EVO engines than we ever did with the older engines but that is simply from the "evolution" of it all.

Most guys running the Tall Deck 64 in a evo machine the squirters in. The real question would be how much does it effect oil pressure?

Dave, what is the "cap" for a street engine for you? Would you still put squirters in on a 500-600hp application if it sees street use?
Spun Evo IX, you are right, people use blocks not equipped with squirters for their builds, but some people opt to install squirters in blocks like the 4G64. I wonder what the long term benefits are in running the squirter versus not running it on an engine that sees 10,000 miles+ a year if there are any.

Now, if I remember correctly, Evolution blocks and 2g 7 bolt blocks share the same oil gallery for the squirter as the mains. I thought 6 bolt blocks have a separate gallery for the squirters. If this is true, maybe the 7 bolt blocks have more of a benefit from getting rid of them?

you are right but if they are they why take them out its not going to hurt you at all but only cool the cylinder walls more and lubricate as well...as for oil pressure i don't think it should affect it much.

We have ran quite a few motors with out them and have not ever seen anything bad. Seen quite a few motors that are reved passed 9k all the time ware they will just break off and fall in the pan. So on most of our high reving 2.0 builds we ditch them.
Most of the cars we build that are over 400whp are Street or Drag cars so I have not much opinion on road race cars. We also ditch the oil cooler on quite a few builds sine new dealer ones are over $500.
