Anyone else had a problem with a bad gas tank from the factory?

Symptoms:
Random misfire diagnostic codes
Spit and sputter on the top end like it was out of gas.

After replacing the fuel injectors, battery, the fpr, and several sets of plugs, a evo viii maf, we began to look at the fuel pump. We noticed the sock looked like it was filled with what appeared to be ground up tea or coffee. We replaced the fuel pump. It fixed the problem for over a month. Suddenly it reappear.

We decide that there is something going on with the fuel pump. We pull it out again. Same problem. It was full of what appeared to be tea or coffee. We decided that I was the victim of a prank so we pulled all the gas out of the tank.

Upon further inspection, the inside of the tank was FULL OF RUST and that coffee or tea was actually small bits of rust.

Has anyone else ran into this problem? Apparently the factory did not coat the inside of the tank and the raw metal rusted when the tank was low on fuel and moisture condensed inside of it.

Wow! I have never heard of this before in an evolution! I had a similar problem but the sputtering was from bad wires

Any luck on getting Mitsubishi to replace it? Sounds like something they should have checked before the car left the factory no?

Had the car sat for a long time? Are you the original owner of the car? What kind of fuel are you running in the car, pump gas only? I have heard of some issues of corrosion with people leaving race gas in the tank like VP Import.

When I bought the car it had 18,000 miles on it. It began having this problem at 40k miles or so. I don't let any grass grow when it comes to letting my daily sit around. FWIW, the factory did replace it and the rest of the fuel system for that matter.

Never fill your tank up at a station that is currently getting a delivery.

Does this "stir up the pot" so to speak?

Yup, and with alcohol blends nowadays its even worse, the water and crap doesn't stay on the bottom.

Is it possible to even buy 100 percent gasoline with NO ethanol? A local gas station claims they have 100 percent gasoline without ethanol added. Coincidentally, this gas station is also where I buy my gas. It is a owner operated service station that sells Exxon gas. I have been to "chain retail convenience" stations that sell Exxon and claim to have up to 10% ethanol blend. From your research, are different blends available to different retailers in as far as it's ethanol content?

From what I have been told the ethanol blend is to increase the octane rating. There are other ways to raise octane but I believe that ethanol is probably the most common. Another thing they have used in the past, which I believe has been banned in the us is MMT, It is what leaves alot of deposits on spark plugs.

Yes - my brother in law owns a garage in Bellefonte,PA and he sold exxon gas and when they went to 10% he refused to spend the money to get his tanks prepped. So he had to drop exxon and now gets 100% gasoline from another supplier....
